Gravity Retaining Walls
Reinforced Soil Retaining Walls
Retaining walls are essential for holding back and stabilizing earth, and we offer a range of options to ensure durable and effective solutions.
Retaining walls come in various forms, incorporating materials such as large rocks, baskets filled with small rocks, treated timber, cast in-situ concrete, and concrete blocks. Each type of retaining wall varies in terms of ease of construction, longevity, and cost-effectiveness.
Here are the two main types of retaining walls we offer:
- Gravity Retaining Walls: Gravity retaining walls rely on their weight and mass to resist the pressure of the retained earth. They are relatively straightforward to construct and can provide long-lasting stability.
- Reinforced Soil Retaining Walls: Reinforced soil retaining walls utilize layers of compacted soil reinforced with geotechnical materials to withstand the pressure from the retained earth. These walls offer versatility and are designed to withstand tensile forces, providing a cost-effective solution.
Gravity Retaining Walls:
Gravity retaining walls utilize their mass to provide resistance against the retained earth. These walls are designed based on specific principles to ensure their stability and prevent failure. If you're interested in learning more about retaining wall design principles and modes of failure, we can provide you with further information.
Types of Gravity Retaining Walls:
- Gabion Basket Retaining Walls: Gabion basket retaining walls are constructed by filling wire baskets with stone. These wire baskets come in various materials such as galvanized wire, plastic-covered galvanized wire, and stainless steel wire. The standard size of the baskets is 1m x 1m x 2m.
- Concrete Block Retaining Walls: Concrete block gravity retaining walls are constructed using interlocking concrete blocks. These blocks typically have dimensions of 600 x 600mm or 800 x 800mm, with various lengths available to accommodate modules of either 600mm or 800mm.
- Inclined Gravity Retaining Walls: Inclined gravity retaining walls are similar to gravity retaining walls, but they lean into the retained earth. The angle of inclination is approximately 15 degrees, which enhances their resistance and reduces the number of required blocks. Inclined retaining walls can be built using gabion baskets, concrete blocks, or large rocks.
Reinforced Soil Retaining Walls:
Reinforced soil retaining walls utilize the retained soil itself for construction, provided it is suitable. These walls are built in layers and reinforced with geotechnical reinforcements, specifically designed to resist tensile forces. The face of the retaining wall can be clad with stone or concrete to protect it from erosion. This method allows for the construction of very high retaining walls, and options such as criblock, gabion baskets, and concrete blocks can be used for facing.
